Discover the Natural Wonder of the State Reserve of Dzilam
THE RESERVE
In 69,039.29 hectares, the Dzilam State Reserve opens the doors to a world of natural wonders interconnected in surprising ways. The understanding of the importance of the mangrove ecosystem and the coastal lagoons has flourished here, forming a symphony of life that resonates in every corner.
The reserve hides a treasure trove that drives coastal biodiversity. This magical interplay between chemical, physical, and biological factors results in an abundance of fish that populate the waters. The species present here, many of them in their early stages of life, not only contribute to the ecological balance, but also have a profound economic impact. Many of these species are essential to the local and regional economy, highlighting the interdependence between nature and human livelihoods.

BIODIVERSITY
At the heart of the reserve, the mangrove stands as a guardian of marine life. Here, sea turtle species such as Eretmochelys imbricata and Chelonia mydas find their home to nest and thrive. But they are not the only ones: the majestic jaguar (Panthera onca) roams the nooks and crannies, while spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) and pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) play in the surrounding waters.
The Reserve is not only home to land and sea creatures, but is also a sanctuary for migratory waterbirds and endemic species. The pink flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) paints the sky with its grace, while the Yucatan rattlesnake (Campilorhyncus yucatanicus) sings its melody high in the trees. And for the bird lovers, the slit-tailed hummingbird (Doricha eliza) is a flying jewel to be admired.
GLOBAL IMPACT
The Dzilam State Reserve is a symbol of commitment to conservation and sustainable development. Its designation as a RAMSAR and AICA site is a testament to its importance at local, state and national levels. It is also an integral part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridors, a strategy that ensures the protection of its unique biodiversity for future generations.
